A Songwriter's Anthology

Well the full 16 track album is now recorded. Have a listen at the link, it’ll be available on ITunes very soon and also as a hard copy CD, let me know if you’d like a copy (obviously the cd version)

I Wish I was supporting Dolly (A Songwriter's Anthology)

I Wish I was supporting Dolly (Tim J Spencer)
So the Summer of 2011 brought an unusual offer, would I like to play a supporting set at the NEC (LG Arena) for the Dolly Parton gig there. Well, not used to getting these offers, I snapped at the chance. Whilst chatting to a friend he suggested I ought to write a song with the title. Apart from amusing I found it inspiring and so designed a song to play at the gig, hopefully to get to her before the gig so she could listen and approve or decline. As it was it wasn’t completed in time and, although I played the gig I didn’t use the song. Having said that I still like some of the lines so thought I’d include it in the compilation.

Christmas Time (A Songwriter's Anthology)

Christmas Time (Tim J Spencer)
So, every Christmas I get an idea, the same as most commercial songwriters get “If only I could get a Xmas number one I’d be made for life”. In 1997 used an old melody of mine (originally from a pantomime and called ‘The Courage of Life’) and relyriced it in the hope I might pitch it to Cliff Richard to follow on from his Mistletoe & Wine and Saviour’s Day tracks. Although he heard it, and also liked it, he chose not to record it. It made its way into my Nativity Musical “The Star Child”, and still, most Christmasses, has the occasional outing in public.

In Love with the Teacher (A Songwriter's Anthology)

In Love with the Teacher (Tim J Spencer)
So, in the Summer of 2010, whilst writing “The Tombstones” I came across an idea I’d had a year or so prior, designed as an uptempo track in the style of McFly etc I thought it might just fit a moment in the show where the two mates of Alex are ridiculing him for being “In Love with the Teacher”. A few tweaks later and I had one of my favourite songs for the show, and one of those Upbeat ones I write occasionally.

She (A Songwriter's Anthology)

She (Tim J Spencer)
‘She’ is one of those songs that comes to you in a burst of inspiration. There was never a rhyme or reason for the song, no heart fluttering over some lady when writing this one, it was just a song. Most of mine are written because something has caused some emotive tug, whether loss, excitement or whatever but this is one of those that was just a tune that came to me one night. Still one of my favourites it’s a rock ballad that has been recorded a couple of times, once in Sweden and once in Germany and, for some reason, always demands attention.

In This Heart of Mine (A Songwriter's Anthology)

In this Heart of mine (Tim J Spencer)
“I bet if you could you change all this” said someone to me after a brief liason, to which my reply was “If I had the chance I’d do it all again”, over the next few months it seemed an appropriate place to start a song. It’s one of those songs that I’d lost in the ether of time since that first performance of the track back in 1997. It’s one of those that I feel warrants a little more time and trouble though. It’s a pop ballad a la Celine, not that I can sing it like that. But it’s one of those songs that I’m proud of.

I Believe in You (A Songwriter's Anthology)

I believe in you (Tim J Spencer)
For a moment in 2008 I managed to track down a contact in Disney. Upon their request to show them what I could do I wanted to create something specific. “I believe in You” was born. I first recorded it as a duet and three years later when drafting the final version of “The Tombstones” managed to filter it into the show, with a lyrical rewrite, for the main characters Alex and Sophie.

Castles in the Sky (A Songwriter's Anthology)

Castles in the Sky (Tim J Spencer)
Back in 1995 I was asked to write a song for a charity record. Me and Anthems always seem to fit so had great fun creating this song. Didn’t make the cut on the charity record unfortunately, some lady called “Madonna” pinched my space, can’t imagine why, but a few years later it was recorded in Nashville and the country version of the track still gets played occasionally. One of these days I’ll get a big choir involved and actually get this how it’s meant to be but for now, well, this is my version.

The Girl in the Picture (A Songwriter's Anthology)

The Girl in the Picture (Tim J Spencer)
How do I explain this one then? Well, it was written for the musical “The Tombstones” in the Spring of 2010. The character of Sophie was always written for someone specific and it was my thoughts about her that inspired it. It’s was written to be sung by Sophie about herself (hence why the last word in my version has changed), but it’s a memory, a daydream of a time now gone. It’s certainly one of my favourite songs created over the last few years and felt it had to go on the album.
